Princess Cut Diamond Earrings

Bez Ambar · April 5, 2018

The princess cut’s square geometry reads differently in earrings than in rings. Understanding the differences shapes better decisions about size, setting, and pairing.

The princess cut was developed in the 1980s as a square-cornered brilliant cut that combined the high light return of a round brilliant with a shape that produced less waste from the rough crystal. The 90-degree corners are the defining feature: unlike the cushion cut’s rounded corners or the Asscher’s chamfered ones, the princess cut has precise right angles that give it a graphic, architectural quality.

In rings, the sharp corners of a princess cut require protection because they are the most vulnerable point of the stone. In earrings, those corners are far better protected. The stone sits against the earlobe rather than projecting horizontally from the finger, which means the abrasion and impact risks that necessitate corner protection in rings are largely absent.

The Visual Difference

Between Ear and Hand

The way a princess cut reads in a stud earring versus on the finger is noticeably different.

On the hand in a ring, a princess cut is viewed face-up, and the square shape and corner angles are the primary visual statement. The stone sits horizontally and its geometry interacts directly with the eye’s natural scanning motion across the hand.

In earrings, a princess cut is viewed in slight perspective from different angles as the wearer moves. The square geometry stays present, but the motion of the earring creates a different light dynamic: the facets catch light as the head moves, producing a more active sparkle effect than the same stone would generate sitting stationary in a ring.

This motion effect is why earrings tend to show cut quality very well. A poorly cut stone in a stud that faces forward toward the observer has nowhere to hide its deficiencies in light performance. A well-cut princess cut in an earring generates strong, clean flashes that are immediately apparent.

Size

and Setting

For studs, total carat weight per pair is the standard way to specify size. A classic princess cut stud set is 0.50 carats total (0.25 per ear), 1.00 carat total (0.50 per ear), or 2.00 carats total (1.00 per ear). Each step up in size is noticeable on the ear.

The four-prong corner setting, where a prong holds each corner of the square, is the most common for princess cut studs. The corners are thus the prong contact points, which provides a secure grip. Bezel settings are less common for princess cuts because the bezel’s rounded inner edge does not always conform precisely to the square shape.

A halo of smaller round diamonds or Blaze® accent stones around a princess center converts the earring from a geometric statement into something more elaborate. The Bez Ambar Ring of Fire halo design in earring form applies the same Blaze® principle as the engagement ring: an unbroken perimeter of accent diamonds that fuses with the center stone and creates a larger apparent total presence.

Pairing

with Other Jewelry

Princess cut studs pair naturally with geometric jewelry: baguette bracelets, rectangular watchfaces, other square-cut stones. The angular language is consistent.

They also pair well with the deliberate contrast of curved pieces: a diamond tennis bracelet with round brilliant links, for example, or a pendant necklace with an oval center. The contrast is intentional rather than accidental.

What People

Ask Us

Are princess cut diamond earrings more fragile than round brilliants? The corners of a princess cut are the theoretical vulnerability, but in earrings this concern is much reduced compared to rings. Studs sit close to the earlobe and do not project in ways that expose corners to abrasion. The practical durability of princess cut studs is very similar to round brilliant studs in normal wear.

What is a good total carat weight for princess cut studs? For daily wear, 0.50 to 1.00 carat total (0.25 to 0.50 per ear) is versatile and comfortable. For a statement piece meant for evenings or special occasions, 1.00 to 2.00 carats total creates a more pronounced presence. The right size depends on the scale of your features and how prominent you want the earrings to be.

Should I choose a four-prong or bezel setting for princess cut studs? Four-prong is more common and more flattering for princess cuts because it shows the full square face of the stone. A bezel partially covers the stone’s perimeter and can make a princess cut appear smaller than it is. For maximum visibility of the square shape, four-prong is the better choice.

Do princess cut studs work for everyday wear? Yes. Studs are among the most practical earring forms for daily wear because they do not snag on clothing or hair. Princess cut studs specifically are low-profile and secure when properly backed with friction or screw-back posts.

Can Bez Ambar make princess cut studs with the Blaze® halo? Yes. The Ring of Fire earring design applies the Blaze® halo to earrings, surrounding the center stone with a continuous perimeter of accent diamonds for a significantly larger apparent presence. Contact us to discuss options.
